Which language do I speak – in a hierarchy of languages? How to translate politics into poetry? And what is happening during the transformation? How to perform it, as a poem? How can an artistic use of language oppose propaganda, fake news, disinformation? Can it do that at all? And can we translate poetry into political praxis?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As part of ROUGH TRANSLATION, we would like to address these questions in a series of readings and performances in Vienna, on the 25th and 26th of January 2023.

Mittwoch 25.01.2023 | 6pm | Vortragssprache: Englisch AIL: Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab FLOW: In this lecture, we discuss the philosophies and techniques of “flow” in poetry as respiratory, sermonic, and ecstatic through a variety of historical and critical contexts including Islamic mysticism, the Black Arts movement, contemporary hip hop, the New York School, and Pacific Islander poetry. Participants will discuss and experiment with prompts that focus on pace, breathwork, vocal delivery, voltas, syllabic accentuation, pause, enjambment, etc. In addition, we will discuss what are the political aspects of “flow” in our contemporary culture. Who has access to breath and who doesn’t? How is our flow of consciousness shaped by our digital lives? What kind do certain obsessive patterns of thought tell us about how our own flow is constructed? What does it mean to “go with the flow” and maybe more importantly, what does it mean to move against it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Donnerstag 26.01.2023 | 6pm | Vortragssprache: Englisch, Universit\u00e4t f\u00fcr Angewandte Kunst<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n AIL: Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab Through the lens of phonetic, semantic, and theological slippage, Transliterative Tease<\/em> explores the potential for transliteration \u2013 the conversion of scripts \u2013 as a strategy equally of resistance and research into notions such as identity politics, colonialism, and faith. The lecture-performance focuses on the Turkic languages of the former Soviet Union, as well as the eastern and western frontiers of the Turkic sphere, namely Anatolia and Xinjiang\/Uighuristan. Lenin believed that the revolution of the east begins with the Latinization of the alphabets of all Muslim subjects of the USSR. The march of alphabets has always accompanied that of empires \u2013 Arabic with the rise of Islam, Latin with that of Roman Catholicism, and Cyrillic with the Orthodox Church and subsequently communism. Sie wurde in Kanada geboren und wuchs in der Gegend von Philadelphia auf. Ihre Familie stammt aus dem ostafrikanischen Goa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ihr kritisch-poetisches Projekt mit dem Titel “The Poetics of Suspense” (Die Poetik der Spannung) ist eine fortlaufende Serie von Umwelt-Cin\u00e9poems \u00fcber die Spannung in verschiedenen Unterwassergebieten vor der K\u00fcste des sizilianischen Festlands und der \u00c4olischen Inseln. Unter Verwendung der einflussreichen Methoden der sensorischen Ethnografie erforscht ihr Projekt insbesondere, wie Spannung zeitlich in einem Grenzraum verankert ist, der durch die \u00c4sthetik des Unterwasserlebens dargestellt werden kann.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In dieser Vorlesung diskutieren wir die Philosophie und Technik des “Flow” in der Poesie als Atem, Predigt und Ekstase anhand verschiedener historischer und kritischer Kontexte, einschlie\u00dflich der islamischen Mystik, der Black Arts-Bewegung, des zeitgen\u00f6ssischen Hip-Hop, der New York School und der Pazifischen Lyrik. Megan Fernandes is a writer living in New York City. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, Poetry Magazine, Ploughshares, The Boston Review, The Los Angeles Review of Books, The American Poetry Review, Tin House, The Kenyon Review, among many other publications. Her second book of poetry, Good Boys (Tin House Books, 2020), was a finalist for the Kundiman Book Prize and the Saturnalia Book Prize. Her third book of poetry, I Do Everything I’m Told (Tin House Books) is forthcoming in June 2023. Fernandes earned a PhD in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara and an MFA in poetry from Boston University and has received fellowships from the Yaddo Foundation, the Swatch Art Peace Residency in Shanghai, the Edward Albee Foundation, and the Hawthornden Foundation in Lake Como.
